7. What is the significance of licensing a patent?
A patent owner may grant a licence to another to allow them to exploit (make, use or sell etc.) the patent whilst retaining the property rights over the patented invention. This allows the patent owner to fully utilize the patented invention (such as expanding its market share or into different geographical markets) and benefit from different income streams.
